Lottery fever is sweeping across the U.S., to start 2021 as the Mega Millions and Powerball games are both nearing record high jackpots.

Neither game has seen its biggest prize hit since the middle of September, and Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing, which will take place just after 11 p.m. ET, has an estimated jackpot of $730 million with an estimated cash value of $546 million. To win it, a ticket, which costs $2, must match all five white numbers plus the red Powerball number.

It means that frequent players and only occasional ones alike will surely be finding the closest lottery retailer location to them and buying at least one ticket, or maybe more, today. Some will simply select the quick pick option, others will including their birthday date or other important personal numbers, and then another group might want to pick the numbers selected most or avoid the ones that haven’t been so lucky since the first draw with 69 numbers happened in October 2015.

If you find yourself in the latter category, do note that every number has the same chance of winning during every drawing. Yet, it’s also a fact that some have certainly been picked more than others over the last handful of years.

The Powerball jackpot for Wednesday’s lottery drawing is an estimated $730 million. Some Powerball numbers get drawn more often than other numbers, according to data from a lottery website.

Math experts will tell you it doesn’t matter which numbers you pick in the huge Powerball lottery jackpot that’s up for grabs Wednesday night. They’ll say the odds are exactly the same for each number to get drawn, because the selection process is random and there’s a precise number of balls in the lottery bin.

However, if you’re looking for some type of “edge” to your Powerball or Mega Millions strategy, it can’t hurt to take a peek at the numbers that have been drawn the most often during the past six years.

A quick reminder: In early October 2015, the main pool of balls in the Powerball lottery was expanded from 59 to 69, and the number of red “Powerballs” were reduced from 35 to 26. Nevertheless, the already astronomical odds of winning the big jackpot got even tougher. (The odds of matching all six numbers are 292,201,338 to 1 for a single $2 ticket.)
