NEW JERSEY – Two $1 million tickets were sold in New Jersey on Tuesday now that the Mega Millions jackpot is nearing $1 billion.

Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing again produced millions of winning tickets, but not one that matched all six numbers – the white balls 10, 19, 26, 28 and 50, plus the gold Mega Ball 16.

As a result, Friday’s jackpot will be an estimated $970 million, or $716.3 million cash, the second-largest prize in the game’s history.

One of the two $1 million tickets in New Jersey was sold in Somerset County on Tuesday in the Mega Millions lottery.

The ticket was sold at Lucky Spot Convenience Store at 100 North Gaston Ave. in Somerville. The other at 7-Eleven in Atlantic City.

Ticket-holders must match the five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second prize.

Additionally, there were eight third-tier prizewinning tickets sold that matched four of the five white balls and the gold ball-winning $10,000. One of those tickets was purchased with the Megaplier option, multiplying the prize to $20,000.

Those tickets were purchased at the following locations:

Powerball, Mega Millions jackpots hit combined $1.3B. Here are the biggest lottery wins in N.J.

Then Vernon-resident Richard Wahl hit the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2018. It’s the largest lottery prize won in New Jersey. New Jersey Lottery

If someone from New Jersey is lucky enough to be the lone winner of either the $750 million Mega Millions or $640 million Powerball jackpots this weekend, that ticket would be the largest lottery prize ever won in New Jersey.

But we may never find out the winner’s name. While previous winners were announced with widespread publicity, New Jersey tickets can be claimed with the option to remain anonymous.

So press conferences like one in 2018— in which then 47-year-old Vernon resident Richard Wahl declined to answer many questions after winning a $533 million jackpot — are probably a thing of the past.

Wahl, who chose the cash option of $324 million, before quickly moving to Florida, holds the distinction of being the holder of the largest lottery jackpot ticket sold in New Jersey. He ended up pocketing about $175 million after federal and state taxes were deducted.

A former Michigan resident who lived in New Jersey for less than a year, Wahl bought the lucky ticket for the March 30, 2018 drawing a Lukoil gas station in Riverdale.

The remainder of the 10 largest lottery prizes won in New Jersey:

  • $448.4 million Powerball jackpot – Aug. 7, 2013. Two of the three jackpot-winning tickets were bought in New Jersey. A group of 16 co-workers at the Ocean County vehicle maintenance garage joined Mario Scarnici, of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, as newly minted millionaires. The other ticket was bought in Minnesota.
  • $429.6 million Powerball jackpot – May 7, 2016. Pearlie Mae Smith, a then 70-year-old from Trenton, and her seven adult children split the big prize — the cash option was $284.1 million before taxes. It was the sixth-largest Powerball prize at the time.
  • $390 million Mega Millions jackpot – March 6, 2007. Elaine and Harold Messner, of the Tuckahoe section of Upper Township, claimed half of the prize — $195 million. They won $87.4 million after taxes were deducted. The other winning ticket was bought in Georgia.
  • $338.3 million Powerball jackpot – March 23, 2013. Pedro Quezada, a then 45-year-old from Passaic, won a lump sum of $211 million, or about $152 million after taxes.
  • $331 million The Big Game jackpot – April 16, 2002. One of the three jackpot-winning prizes was claimed by Jorge and Joanne Lopes of Manalapan. The other winning tickets were sold in Georgia and Illinois. The cash option of each ticket was worth about $58 million. The Big Game was re-named Mega Millions later in 2002.
  • $330 million Mega Millions jackpot – Aug. 31, 2007. John and Sandy Belawsky of the Villas section of Lower Township, held one of four jackpot winning tickets. The others were bought in Virginia, Texas and Maryland. The Bellawskys, a retired couple, chose the cash option — a prize of about $48.6 million before taxes.
  • $315.3 million Powerball jackpot on May 19, 2018. Tayeb Souami, a 55-year-old accountant from Little Ferry, was the sole winner of the drawing. His pre-tax prize was $183.2 million.
  • $273 million Mega Millions jackpot on March 1, 2019. Michael J. Weirsky, 54, of Alpha, Warren County bought the only ticket to match five numbers plus the Mega Ball. He chose the cash option, worth $162.5 million before taxes.
  • $258 million Mega Millions jackpot on Sept. 16, 2005. Harold and Helen Lerner, of Rutherford, took the cash option – $156.1 million and ended up with about $117,075,000. Harold was 60 at the time of the big win, according to reports.

Two Mega Millions jackpots were hit in New Jersey in 2020. An anonymous winner claimed the $202 million prize won on Feb. 11 with a ticket sold in Edison and a $124 million ticket was bought in Bayonne for the July 24 drawing.

A jackpot-winning ticket valued at $190 million was sold at liquor store in Piscataway for the April 8, 2020 Powerball drawing.

The odds are, of course, extremely long that there will be a jackpot winning ticket sold in the Garden State this weekend. The odds are 302,575,350 to 1 for Mega Millions and 292,201,388 to 1 for Powerball.

Both jackpots have steadily climbed — with each holding 34 drawings since being won a day apart nearly four months ago. A $119 million Mega Millions jackpot was won Sept. 15 in Wisconsin, while a $94.8 million Powerball ticket was sold in Ballston Spa, New York for the Sept. 15 drawing.
